Painting MDF

MDF can be painted, but we need to follow the correct steps to make sure your MDF painting projects get you a perfect paint job.

Can You Paint MDF?

MDF is simply wood pulp mixed together with resin and then pressed into sheets. You can also buy pre-mixed products like plywood, particle board and hardboard. These are all made out of the same basic ingredients, but differ in thickness and density. For example, plywood is usually thinner and denser than particle board, while particle board is thicker and less dense than hardboard. It is commonly used as a surface material in furniture construction. When selecting paints for your project, you should consider the type of finish you wish to achieve. If you are looking to get a smooth, glossy finish, then a matte varnish will likely provide the best results. Conversely, if you are looking to create a textured appearance, then a semi-gloss or satin finish may be ideal.

What Is The Best Paint For MDF?

Primer

It is important to prime your wood before applying any paint. You should use a primer and sealant to ensure that you get a smooth finish. If you apply a primer first then you will need to wait for at least 24 hours before applying another coat of paint. A primer also helps prevent peeling when you apply another layer of paint.

Paint

This product is designed to be used on MDF boards, however, you may also apply it to wood panels. The primer is formulated with acrylic latex polymer emulsion, providing excellent adhesion to both primed and unprimed surfaces. It contains a proprietary blend of polymers, allowing the primer to dry quickly, without leaving any sticky residue. You can expect the primer to dry within 10 minutes. When applied correctly, the primer will provide excellent coverage, making sure your surface is protected from moisture, dirt and other contaminants.

Painting MDF surfaces Step by Step:

Materials / tools:
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • 150-grit sandpaper
  • Sanding Block
  • Dust Mask
  • Protective goggles
  • Paint Brush
  • Solvent-based primer
  • Paint tray
  • Roller
  • Damp cloth
  • Paint
1. For safety make sure to wear a dust mask and goggles. Laying the MDF panels flat starts by sanding down your MDF. Use a sanding block and 220-grit sandpaper to start then finish the sanding with the lighter sandpaper, use a circular motion and pay special attention to edges and corners. Stop when you have an even and smooth surface, make sure to use a wood filler if needed for any cracks. Finish by wiping down with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris.

2. Then we need to apply two coats of solvent-based primer with a paint brush. Again lay the MDF sheet flat and paint the edges with the paint brush, make sure to get all the rough edges completely coated. For a uniform appearance use a roller on the flat sides, it is also a lot quicker. Allow the primer to dry completely between coats.

3. Visually check the sheets for any drips, cracks, or imperfections before we apply the final paint, use a sanding pad if needed. For a more durable finish, we want to add two coats of stain paint in your chosen colour. We want to paint the edges first using a paintbrush and then a roller on the flat surface, this makes for a perfect finish. Finally, when the two coats have been applied, let dry completely before applying any sealers.
